Phil Madden Circ 1930
10 January 2010, 9:23 pmFor your jottings section. My father Philip John Madden Circ 1930 was mentioned some time ago in an article by an old boy Mr Bird, a Macksville dentist. He mentioned that father was that loverly white haired elderly gentlman he had met probably through Shobs in the 1970s. Just to let you know the loverly white haired old boy has just turned ninety one and except for being a bit deaf and partially blind is in as good a form and spirits as he ever was. He is supplied with three good sorts each week to do the housework and take him shopping, but apart from that, still looks after himself. His wife Betty died six years ago. He is a very private person so it would be much appreciated that no attempt is made to contact him. Purely for information.
Jon Firth (Class of '73):
I have recently completed the design and construction of a large (10 square metre) stained glass window for St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral in Darwin NT. Commemorating 100 years of service by the “Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart” in the Top End of the Northern Territory. This is the first new stained glass commissioned for the Cathedral in 40 years and represents the first step in an ambitious plan to renovate the entire church.

Class of 1967 - Living the good life in Russell, Bay of Islands, New Zealand, for the last 5 years. Ad agencies and playing consultant didn’t snag me an OAM, but supplied enough to retire 10 years ago. So I fish at breakfast meeting time, read books in place of spreadsheets, exercise instead of hyperventilate, travel for enjoyment.
5 May 2010, 7:53 amIf you’re passing by, come and visit.
Hi Normie, say hello to your Dad and bro from me.
Wayne, c’mon, welcome to our century - computers love you!

After transferring from an incomplete Mechanical Engineering degree to a combined Education/Mathematics degree, I was lucky enough to land a job teaching Mathematics at The King’s School, Parramatta, where I have been teaching since Term 2 last year (2009). While I am enjoying the challenges of the early years of teaching and the demands and expectations of such a prestigious school, it does make for mixed emotions when I coach against the old school - of which I remain a proud old boy!
3 July 2010, 12:13 amRodzaki M Saad:
I was an overseas student (Malaysian) in SHS in 1980 for HSC/yr 12 prior to doing Engineering in Sydney Uni. As a fresh 17 year old, I have always cherished SHS for helping me through culture (and school) shock safely with its wonderful teachers - at last a chance here to say Thank you! Back in Malaysia after graduating mid 80’s, I joined MMI, AMD and Spansion (all Silicon Valley microelectronics companies) in Engineering Device Analysis Dept. I have always wanted a simple, quiet life and last year, at 46 has started trying to be in retirement, full time taking care of my ageing mum, and wife and my late teenage boy and daughter. Besides helping my kids through school/college, I now spend my days trying to start on computer arts (loved art all along but learned oil and acrylics while in Sydney and then stopped for 20 years to focus on, well, salary). Not wealthy by any means but if I can struggle through to my last days like this, I’d consider I made it!

After spending almost twenty years living in Wagga Wagga as the Finance Director for the listed Finemore Group of Companies (Road Transport) I returned to Sydney in 1999 and set up my own consulting business as Next Step Solutions, concentrating on assisting fast growing and emerging companies to solve strategic, personnel, resource, finance and cultural problems as they emerged from a small base to become a larger and more viable enterprise. I have served on the board of a number of companies in the personnel, manufacturing, building services and agricultural industries and worked across a range of industries in growing companies including publishing, retail, building services, web design and importation. I currently serve on the boards of two companies - ARB Corporation Limited (world-wide four wheel drive aftermarket equipment manufacture and distribution), and Robson Civil (infrastructure construction projects in civil, rail and mining industries). In these roles I have enjoyed coming across a number of SHS Old Boys.

19 September 2010, 12:06 amAfter Com Law studies at Sydney Uni and work with the Crown Solicitor and Office of State Revenue, I’ve taken up training in Christian ministry. Recently I completed studies at Moore Theological College. These days I love criss-crossing the Sydney CBD, occasionally meeting up with Old Boys’ I taught in the Sydney High Inter-School Christian Fellowship from 1999-2003 in my work with the City Bible Forum (www.citybibleforum.org), helping out with some lunchtime Bible forums, and running get-togethers for young city workers. I still pass the school on my way into work on the bus nearly everyday!
John Younie (1953):
After 35 years in the Comm. Bank 6 years with Burwood Council (NSW) I have settled into retirement easily. Still play Table Tennis after 55 years and represent NSW at Australian Veterans TT Championships. Took up Lawn bowls 6 years ago and as usual have taken over as Secretary to keep myself active. Swim with an RSL social club and am quite fit for my age. At other times keeping in touch with 11 garndchildren takes some doing. Won the GPS Old Boys Lawn Bowls tournament 2009 with some boys of my era - the only time I have represented the school so was quite chuffed ! Never rose to any great hights in the business world but have enjoyed the life I have created for myself.
