Class of 1985 30 year reunion
On the 17th of October, 50+ boys from the class of 1985 gathered at the Lord Dudley Hotel in Paddington.
The creation of Facebook page meant that people were easier to contact than it had been for the 10th and 20th. The Facebook page that we created also provided our internationally based classmates with an avenue to share in the build up over the months and join the anticipation even though they were unable to attend.
Unsurprisingly, it took very little time for the banter to ramp up and everyone, by all accounts, hit the ground running. For some it was the first time (David Holt, Kelvin McEwen) they had been to a reunion and they had not seen many people since they left school. For others it has become a regular 10 year catch up.
Each reunion has been better than the last with any pretence now thrown away. By the time you hit 48ish life has thrown everyone a few curved balls, so everyone was just thrilled to be there.
A special mention must be made of the Federal Treasurer (Scott Morrison) who made an appearance on the night and I am sure he is richer for the helpful critique and useful tips some of his ex classmates provided.
As far as the way we looked, lets just say that we continue to add to our ‘rugged good looks’ as the years go by. Think Sean Connery, George Clooney.
As the night wore on we were moved from our private room to the main bar. There we were delighted to be joined by about 12-15 of the Girls from the class of 1985 SGHS (they came from their reunion which happened to be on the same night). It capped off what had already been a fantastic night.
The consensus has been an overwhelming view that 10 years ‘between drinks’ is far too long. We will be moving to a 5-year cycle from now on.
My reflection of the night is that the group of boys that came out of our year have become a great bunch of men. I certainly cannot remember when I have had so much fun.
