SBHS 1986: 30-year reunion
The organising committee’s efforts in using social media, warm leads and sheer luck managed to track down the majority of the year, resulting in over fifty-five ex-students and a small number of teachers calling “present, sir” at the Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst on Saturday 13 August. Many of those unable to make it, many from interstate and overseas, sent their apologies and best wishes.
Highlights of the night included a speech by Richard Givney, the year master, scolding some old boys as he noted that he still hadn’t seen their end-of-year assignments. Charles Lynam reminded everyone of how long ago 1986 actually was, and reflected on the strength of school culture that brought such a diverse bunch together after all this time.
A few old rivalries were rekindled in an organised debate on the topic “It is better to live fast and wild in middle age than in high school”. Sacha Molitorisz consulted the boisterous crowd before ruling in favour of Ben Pearson and Steven Ezekiel for the affirmative over Richard McHugh and Geoff Bloom for the negative.
Geoff Dolphin and Nick Harris proved that some things get etched on your mind forever as they hosted a trivia quiz based on events, people and scuttlebutt from the old days, before everyone joined to sing the School’s fair name in measures loud and long.
The organising committee, superbly led by Chris Jones, collected some of the old photos and published a record of the night on a website accessible to all at www.sbhs1986reunion.com.
