ROWERS REUNION A GREAT SUCCESS
It was memories all round for a group of 30 SHS Old Boy rowers of the 1950-1960 era when they gathered at their former Boathouse for lunch & a chat in November. This was a group of former SHS rowers from a ‘golden era’ in SHS rowing!
Those in attendance represented 3 x Head of the River VIII victories; 4 x Yaralla Cup 1st IV winners; 3 x 2nd IV winners; 2 x 3rd IV winners.
All of this rowing in the years 1950 – 65 period of SHS rowing on the Nepean River at Penrith.
Visitors travelled from interstate & all parts of NSW!
It was great to welcome Jim Woodcock who stroked the winning SHS VIII in 1953.
Jim was amazed at the ‘big changes’ to the current SHS rowing HQ & very envious of the conditions enjoyed by this era of SHS rowers!
Another ‘special’ former SHS rowing visitor was Ron Caddy (1959) who could claim to be ‘the most successful SHS coxswain ever’!!
Ron coxed to victory at Penrith in the GPS Regatta the following crews:
1957 2nd IV
1958 1st IV
1959 1st VIII
The group wish to thank Geoff Andrews (Foundation) who hosted the group at SHS Rowing HQ at Abbotsford & answered the many questions put to him by the interested former rowers.
A wonderful lunch was enjoyed by all at Sydney Rowing Club after the tour.
The group departed after a very special gathering vowing to meet again in 2017. This will be the 60th Anniversary of the winning 1957 SHS 1st VIII at Penrith!
