The Sydney High School Old Boys Union holds regular mentoring, interview training and careers advice sessions for students at the school.

Due to the COVID restrictions, we cannot provide these face to face in the school hall as we normally would do. As such, The Old Boys, led by Eric Wong of the class of 2000 and a member of the Union Committee and Foundation Board of Directors, will be holding a series of webinars.

Usually these are available to Years 11 & 12 students who are up to date on their annual Old Boys Union fees, or for a small fee to non-members. However, we are making the first session available free of charge to all students from Years 7 to 12.

Medical Career Mentoring Webinar

The first in the series is the Medical career mentoring session.

The aim of the session is to hear from four Old Boys across various fields in medicine, explaining the varied nature of careers available and their personal journeys. The boys will also have time to ask questions of the Doctors.

You will hear from the following Old Boys:

Dr. Ying Hong Li (2000) BSc(Med) MBBS MBA FRANZCOG

Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Fertility Specialist

Dr Ying Hong Li provides a compassionate and personalised approach to fertility treatment. Ying invests time in understanding his patients and developing the most appropriate plan to address their specific fertility issues to maximise their chance of having a baby. Ying’s unwavering focus is testament to his passion for women’s health. A leader in obstetrics, gynaecology and fertility treatment, he can support patients from pre-conception right through to birth. He enjoys the long relationship he has with patients on their journey to become parents, providing care throughout the conception, pregnancy and birth chapters. Ying believes in partnering with patients to explain and then develop an effective management plan. He understands fertility treatment can be overwhelming and collaboration with a Fertility Specialist is imperative. In addition to male and female factor infertility, Ying has a special interest in reproductive surgery, recurrent pregnancy loss and fertility preservation.

Dr. Owen Mattern (1999) BSc(hons), MBBS, PhD

Shoulder and Elbow Orthopaedic Surgeon

Owen graduated from medicine at Newcastle University in 2004 and moved to Melbourne in 2006. He completed the Victorian Orthopaedic training in 2016, being accepted as a Fellow into the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. After working as a Visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon at Box Hill and Sandringham Hospitals he completed further specialist training in 2017 and 2018. Owen completed clinical fellowships with world experts at the Sydney Shoulder Research Institute, under the guidance of Mr Ben Cass, Mr Allan Young and Mr Jeff Hughes, and the Upper Limb Unit at the Centre for Excellence for Orthopaedic Surgery at Wrightington Hospital in the United Kingdom, working with Mr Mike Walton, Prof Len Funk, Prof Adam Watts and Mr Steve Bale. These fellowships gave Owen experience in the management of complex upper limb conditions. Having returned to Melbourne, Owen currently operates publicly at Sandringham District Hospital, Box Hill Hospital and more.

Dr Chris Ryan (1982) MBBS FANZCA

Anaesthetist

Chris received his HSC from SBHS in 1982, subsequently studying medicine at Sydney University - graduating with an MBBS in 1988. He was an intern at Concord Repatriation Hospital before gaining his medical registration in 1989. Initially thinking he would like to pursue specialist training in surgery, Chris changed track in 1992 and was accepted into the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists training programme. Chris was awarded Fellowship of the college in 1996 and during his training had rotations at Concord Hospital, Auburn Hospital, Nepean Hospital, The Kids Hospital and Westmead Hospital. Once qualified, Chris initially worked as a staff specialist at Westmead Hospital, before switching to private practice in 1998 and has remained in private practice since then. He currently has appointments to Sydney Adventist Hospital (where he was head of section), North Shore Private Hospital and several smaller Day Surgery Hospitals.

Nikhil Autar (2011)

Current Medical Student

Nikhil is a medical student, studying Medicine, Surgery, and Med Research at Western Sydney University and currently about to embark on a PhD. He is also the founder of a medical device start-up that won Australian Student Startup of the Year and is about to launch its first product! He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in year 12, but was fortunate enough to still accomplish his dream of studying medicine. Back at High, he was always academic, and was heavily involved in debating and rugby, but his true love was basketball (you could always find him on the court!).
